In this observation, pay attention to how your teacher manages his or her classroom. What types of disruptions, if any, occur while you're visiting? How do they set the class in motion? How do they deal with interruptions (from the outside) and disruptions (from their students)? Determine whether there are students in the classes that you will teach that are especially troublesome. Ask your CT how he or she addresses these students' needs. Reflect on your "vision" of an ideal science classroom. What classroom policies will you try to implement in YOUR classroom? How does your vision align with your teaching philosophy?
The disruptions mostly consist of just talking, working on work for another class, silly questions, inappropriate comments. The comments, talking and silly questions seem to be the ones that tend to set the class off. Now the outside disruptions consist of another teacher entering the room or a student in the hall trying to get the attention of a student in the classroom.
For the outside disruptions she will close the door or introduce the visitor before addressing the reason for their visit. This usually eliminates the talking which tends to consist of inquiries regarding who the person is or why they are here. For the comments,or the silly questions, she has just implemented a new method where she will place a strip of paper on their desk. Once they receive three they are not allowed to ask anymore questions. So she tells them they should think about the questions they are going to ask because when they have a serious question she they might not be able to ask it. The talking is addressed by just saying to quiet down and this seems to work for the classes I have observed. Those students who are caught working on other classes work usually get a warning and then if they continue the work is taken and returned at the end of class.
Part of my teaching philosophy is to prepare my students to become respectful productive members of society. I feel respect is earned and I will convey that if they respect me I will in turn respect them. Part of respect is allowing a person or authority figure to speak with out interuptions. I also feel by making expectations clear and being consistant with whatever method you choose to use. I can't really say what policy or strategy I will use because every class is different and different methods might be more effective in a class with a certain mentallity.
